Heading for Marambio Base

Heading for Marambio Base

After flying for over 19 hours, crossing the South Pole, and fighting turbulence, mountains, and headwinds, Captain Michel Gordillo is on track for a landing at the northernmost Antarctic station, Marambio Base.

During the flight Michel was in doubt that the flight could make it to the station due to headwinds diminishing his ground speed. Sky Polaris HQ made calls to several stations along the way (Union Glacier (USA), Sky Blu (British), Rothera(British)). All stations said they could provide humanitarian support , but not the required fuel. We thank them for their offers of support! After getting a boost in speed from tailwinds, the decision was made to proceed to Marambio Base.

But this flight across Antarctica is not yet complete. The weather at Marambio Base is not ideal with strong winds from the southwest, partial cloud cover, and low ceiling.

Marambio Base is a permanent Argentine station with a cleared runway, lights, navigational aids, etc and is used to supply the other bases in Antarctica. It has the capability to handle large aircraft such as C-130s.

As of this writing, the Sky Polaris flight is scheduled to arrive at Marambio base at approximately 1600 UTC.
